The Ssamba Centre is located in the beautiful deep greenery of rural Uganda; a small village called Namanganga, in the sub-county of Kyampisi…in Mukono district
……….but the problems:
- Difficult access to Medical Care and Education
- Poor Nutrition and lack of access to clean and safe water
- Orphans and vulnerable children are neglected (no future perspectives or lack of guaranteed safety)
- Not enough resources and knowledge for agricultural work
- Needed support for micro-financing projects (Lack of self-trust and knowledge for becoming independent)
This village of Namanganga is about 40km from Kampala (the capital of Uganda) or just 25km from Mukono town. Little or no aid had ever reached the village – they have no water, competent school, clinic or any of the things we take for granted in everyday life.
Despair is all you see in the village, disease and poverty is everywhere, children and adults alike feel they are the forgotten people.
…….our vision for this:
We wish to set up a Social Center (“The Ssamba Center”) in the middle of Namanganga village in favor of its inhabitants and surrounding villages – to supply and support them for an independent life step by step. The plan is to construct several buildings with different functions:
“The Ssamba Children’s Centre”: an informal school to provide informal education for out of school children during the week. On weekends, it is planned to use the rooms for teachings and community outreaches, such as raising awareness about hygenical problems and diseases, as well as organizing business trainings. Later in future, we also would like to extend the trainings to teaching in practical professions such as joinery, tailoring or hair dressing, to later on include them actively in the life of the Social Center itself.
A Community Library: Ssamba Foundation is establishing a community library as a way of promoting a reading culture and empowering local schools in Mukono, Uganda. The community library will serve as a resource centre for local students, teachers and the general community of Mukono and surrounding villages. The Library will have a collection of educational material for elementary, secondary, vocational school curriculum, social books, self-help books and magazines, novels and newspapers.
The community will become well informed because people will have access to a wealthy information resource. Agriculture being the backbone of Uganda’s economy especially for rural populations, books on modern methods of farming and sustainable agriculture will be made available to the farmers. Entertainment and media materials will be made accessible to the community. This will be a resource for recreation and learning. Employment opportunities will be created for the local people.
Sports and Entertainment Centre: Ssamba Foundation developed a Sports and Entertainment Development Program with an aim of enhancing the physical, social and emotional development of children and youth in Mukono district. The program provides at-risk children and youth a safe environment in which they participate in a number of extra-curricular activities.
The people of Namanganga know that this mission is not accomplished within only a few weeks. Nevertheless, it has opened their hearts for a still small but strong seed of hope. A hope for change and a future with a meaning. This project has been created with the aim to support sustainable independence in Kyampisi Subcounty, step by step. As the funds are not always the same or regular, the organization will try to integrate several functions in the already built constructions to be able to start off soon with the community work.
