Preparing for a volunteer experience in Uganda is exciting, but packing wisely can make your stay more comfortable and enjoyable. Whether you are joining the Ssamba Foundation’s Community Volunteer Program in Kyampisi, Mukono District, or travelling elsewhere in the country, bring items that suit the climate, community activities and local lifestyle.
1. Clothing and Footwear
Uganda has a generally warm tropical climate, although mornings and evenings can be cooler, particularly during rainy periods. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing that is comfortable for everyday activities.
Useful items include:
- T-shirts, shirts and comfortable trousers.
- Modest clothing suitable for visiting local communities.
- A light sweater or jacket for cooler evenings.
- A raincoat or lightweight waterproof jacket.
- Comfortable walking shoes or trainers.
- Sandals or casual shoes.
- A hat and sunglasses for sun protection.
For practical activities such as gardening, construction support or outdoor community projects, bring clothes and shoes that can get dirty.

2. Personal and Health Essentials
Pack your usual toiletries, personal hygiene products and any prescription medication you need. Other useful items include sunscreen, insect repellent, hand sanitizer, a reusable water bottle and a small first-aid kit.
Consult a travel-health professional before departure about recommended vaccinations, malaria prevention and other health precautions for your itinerary.
3. Electronics and Travel Documents
Bring your mobile phone, charger, power bank and any equipment needed for your work or personal use. Uganda uses Type G electrical sockets, so an appropriate travel adapter may be necessary.
Keep your passport, visa or entry documentation, travel insurance details, flight information and emergency contacts safely accessible. Carry copies of important documents separately from the originals.

4. Useful Items for Volunteering
Depending on your interests and planned activities, consider bringing a notebook, pens, a small backpack, reusable shopping bag or laptop. Volunteers interested in educational activities may also bring suitable learning resources, subject to prior coordination with the Foundation.
Small cultural exchange items, photographs or souvenirs from your home country can also help create conversations and friendships.
5. Pack Light and Come with an Open Mind
At Ssamba Foundation, volunteers stay at Kyampisi Backpackers Home and participate in community activities according to ongoing projects and local priorities. You do not need to bring everything; practical arrangements and guidance will be shared before arrival.
Most importantly, pack respect, flexibility and curiosity. Your willingness to learn, share and embrace Ugandan culture will be among your most valuable travel companions.
